An Hour I’ll Never Get Back: Was It Worth It? is a solo YouTube series that puts games through a structured, hour-long design critique rather than a casual review. Framed around a CS degree and a game designer’s eye, each episode spends 60 minutes with a game and comes out the other side with a verdict: Definitely Worth It, Maybe Worth It, Not Worth It, or Never Worth It.

Evaluation Framework

Rather than reviewing on vibes, the series runs every game through a consistent four-part structure:

  1. The Hook — genre fidelity, the game’s defining unique mechanic, and how well its aesthetics (visual, audio, and asset polish) come together in the first few minutes.
  2. The Code & Craft — how well the game teaches its own systems and paces that ramp-up, the strength of its retention loop and progression curve, how well narrative integrates with and supports the gameplay, and whether the technical implementation (stability, framerate, bugs) actually holds up.
  3. The Final Evaluation — whether the game achieved its own apparent design thesis, who the game is actually for and where it sits in the current market, and ultimately whether the hour spent was worth it.
  4. The Future — constructive design feedback on what could be improved, an honest read on conceptual novelty versus execution, and what a logical next step or sequel would look like.

Scale and Scope

The series has already been run against a huge personal game library — the tracking spreadsheet spans hundreds of titles, with a rotating mix of full playthrough verdicts already logged (recent entries include Balatro, Hollow Knight, Hades, Baldur’s Gate 3, Path of Exile 2, and Outer Wilds, among many others) and a long backlog still marked for future episodes.

Coming Back

The series originally ran for a stretch before going on hiatus, and is now being actively revived — picking the format back up rather than starting from scratch, with the existing spreadsheet serving as both a production log and a long-term backlog for future episodes.

Final Result

An Hour I’ll Never Get Back applies real design-analysis rigor to game criticism, turning a simple “was it worth it” question into a repeatable framework that treats hook, craft, and market fit as distinct, gradable dimensions rather than one blended impression. You can rewatch any of the VODs here.
